Background and Facilities available -

The department of anesthesiology was established in 1925 with Dr.M.N. Desai as honorary anesthesiologist. He was assisted by casualty officers in anaesthesia. Dr.Y G. Bhojraj and Dr. Sarkar were some of the eminent people who have worked in this department at the time. Dr. G. S. Ambardekar, the father figure of anesthesia in our country was instrumental in bringing up this department. The full-time department was started in 1963 with Dr. A.J. Dhruva as Professor and Head of the department of Anesthesia.

The department is fully equipped with recent state- of-the-art anesthesia machines, supplicated monitoring gadgets and ventilators, newer anesthetic drugs and an excellent departmental library. Apart from regular anesthesia, the department renders services for various specialties like intensive care, trauma care, and emergency medical services, anesthesia OPD, pain clinic, labor analgesia and CPCR workshops. The department has excellent academic programs with regular CMEs and workshops.

Course Details -

The academic activities will include active participation of the students. Two theory lectures will be held per week. There will also be clinical teaching in different work areas like in the theatre and in the Intensive care area, symposia, case discussions, lecture series, journal review and mortality and morbidity meetings. The candidate will be required to undertake a project in the cardiac anesthesia and present the same at the end of tenure.

The state of art Pulmonary Function Testing laboratory offers equipment and expertise for under takin detailed evaluation of pulmonary functions. This includes Spirometry, Diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide, lung volumes with Body Plethysmograpy, measurement of residual volume and total lung capacity by helium dilution method and arterial blood gas analysis.

Lung functions are a useful parameter used for diagnosis and prognosis of various lung disorders. They offer a valuable guide for pre-anaesthesia work up for deciding surgical fitness. Being performance-dependent test, technique of lung function testing is crucial.

Course Details -

The objective of this certificate course will be to make the physician familiar with the technicalities including caliberation and maintenance, performance and interpretation of lung functions. There will be lectures on Clinical Spirometry regarding the indications, limitations, Equipments quality control, static lung volumes and capacities, dynamic lung volumes and flow rates, and there will be lectures on Airway resistance and compliance, diffusing capacity, and Bronchoprovocation testing. WHO-ICMR workshop in Clinical Pharmacology & short courses in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring & Adverse Drug Reactions monitoring -

Background and Facilities available -

Clinical Pharmacology services and research unit started in 1989, and is functioning as a full-fledged Department of Clinical Pharmacology from 1st June 1995. It is headed by Dr Nilima Kshirsagar. Dr Sudeshna S. Dalvi is the Associate Professor and Dr Nithya Gogtay is the lecturer. It also has over 15 research scientists; MSc and PhD students who undertake Clinical Pharmacology research.

The Department offers Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) services through a TDM epilepsy outpatient clinic, in house biochemistry, has a well equipped microbiology laboratory, Adverse Drug reactions (ADR) monitoring cell of the Drugs Controller General of India and Special ADR Centre of the World Health Organization, Ranbaxy medical information centre, Department of Biotechnology’s Liposome research centre, a 25 bedded Clinical Pharmacology Infectious Diseases ward, a 20 bedded Clinical pharmacology ward, and an Integrated Medicine Outpatient department (Complementary and Alternative Medicine outpatient department). The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has recently set up an Advanced Centre for Clinical Pharmacology research at the department. The Department specializes in conduct of all phases of clinical trials (including with alternative systems), that come from both the pharmaceutical industry, as well are initiated by the department.

Areas of expertise include apart from the above, include tropical diseases- viz malaria (including new drug evaluation; drug resistance evaluation and treatment, a special malaria clinical pharmacology outpatient department runs everyday), filariasis (collaborative projects with the WHO and Bernard Nocht Tropical Institute, Germany), and liposomal drug delivery systems (the department has manufactured and patented for the first time in Asia, a cost-effective liposomal amphotericin B formulation using indigenous lipids). The department is also now foraying into pharmacogenetics.

The faculty for the course includes staff of the department of clinical pharmacology, eminent researchers, physicians and clinical pharmacologists from the WHO, ICMR, and from within the institution.

Course details -

The objectives of the WHO-ICMR course are to familiarize the participants with the principles and practice of Clinical Pharmacology and enable them establish Clinical Pharmacology departments/units in their own institutions. Over a 2 week period, there are didactic lectures, and interactive sessions, on various clinical pharmacology topics. The participants attend the malaria and TDM outpatient clinics, take rounds in the Clinical Pharmacology ward for volunteer and patient studies, visit various research institutions and pharmaceutical companies. They are taught principles of HPLC that includes hands on experience and given exercises on protocol designing, case record from designing and statistics. They are also encouraged to submit collaborative projects with the department.

Time of the year when the course is proposed to be conducted -

September/November each year, the short courses on TDM and ADR are held round the year.


Duration - 2 weeks, for the WHO-ICMR Clinical Pharmacology workshop, the short courses for TDM and ADR are also for 2 weeks duration.

Periodicity - Once a year for the WHO-ICMR workshop. The TDM and ADR courses are held round the year.

Course fees - The WHO ICMR course is sponsored, while the fees is Rs 1000/- for the TDM and ADR short courses


Eligibility -

MD Pharmacology/MD Medicine/MD Pediatrics with at least 3 years teaching experience in a MCI recognized medical college. Selection based on merit (research work done, publications, awards won). For the short courses, an MD degree in any of the above mentioned subjects is adequate.


Collaborators -

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization(WHO) for the WHO-ICMR Clinical pharmacology course/workshop, who provide sponsorship. For the short courses, the sponsorship is expected from the participants’ institution.

Evaluation -

Pre and post workshop questionnaire evaluated by resource persons of the course, and the ability of the participants to translate their learning into setting up of Clinical Pharmacology units at their respective institutions.

Course details -

The objectives of the course are to train candidates in proper examination, interpretation of investigations and proper management of emergency cases; to equip one with the knowledge of emergency drugs, toxicities and drug-delivery systems; to know handling and maintenance of emergency equipments; and to handle computers for data entry, analyses and research.

Candidates will be posted in EMS for eight hours continuously on rotation basis and given hands-on training on various emergency procedures like endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, CVP line insertion, tracheostomy etc.and usage of emergency drugs, their dosage and delivery systems.

The objective of the course is to train technicians in hemodialysis. The department was established in 1928 and is presently headed by Dr. A. A. Pandit. There is a well-equipped blood bank with component separation facility. There is a zonal blood-testing centre where tests for HIV, HBSAg and HCV are conducted. The personnel working in these laboratories are approved by FDA. Staff from blood banks all over the country and the staff of FDA come to receive training at this blood bank.

General Objective -
