Course on Blood Banking and Component Separation -

Organised and conducted by - Blood Bank, Department of Pathology

Background and facilities available
The department was established in 1928 and is presently headed by Dr. A. A. Pandit. There is a well-equipped blood bank with component separation facility. There is a zonal blood-testing centre where tests for HIV, HBSAg and HCV are conducted. The personnel working in these laboratories are approved by FDA. Staff from blood banks all over the country and the staff of FDA come to receive training at this blood bank.

General Objective -
This training programme is an orientation course for medical officers and laboratory technicians working in blood banks and is designed to provide knowledge in blood banking procedures and component separation.

For medical officers: M.B.,B.S. with 6 months' experience in blood banking or M.D. Pathology
For technicians: B.Sc. with DMLT

Evaluation - By way of a practical examination at the end of the course

Course on Cardiac Pathology -

Cardiovascular and thoracic division of Department of Pathology

Background and facilities available
The department was established in 1968 and is presently headed by Dr. Ajita A. Pandit. The cardiovascular and thoracic division was established and nurtured by Dr. Suman G. Kinare and further grew under the leadership of Dr. Jaya R. Deshpande. It is presently headed by Dr. Shobhana P. Pandit. In the past, successful workshops have been conducted on cardiac pathology in which cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and pathologists from all over the country have participated and benefited.

Course Details -
The aim is to study congential heart-disease from embryologic and anatomic point of view with application towards diagnosis on 2-D Echocardiography and surgery. This will be by means of lectures and demonstration of specimens.
