Director’s Message

The twin institutes of the Seth GS Medical College & KEM hospital were established in 1926 with a nationalistic spirit to cater to the “health care needs of the northern parts of the island” to be manned entirely by Indians. With a glorious legacy of over 90 years, 19 lakh patients annually and 70,000 plus surgeries, these institutes are among the top ranked in the country with the Latin Maxim “Non SibiSed Omnibus”- not for self, but for all, embedded in every heart.

The year 2015-16 was marked by several achievements. The state-of-the-art renovated Emergency Medical Services was commissioned. In the 90th year of KEM celebrations, every department conducted academic programs. The college was ranked best amongst all medical schools in western region of India. The Hospital has acquired a new Cardiac catheterisation laboratory, Digital subtraction angiography machine, MRI, and CT scan. A new PET scan machine is also likely to be installed by this year. In addition to technology, college has many innovative programs such as bioethics unit, Late Dr. MVL Kothari Chair of humanity division, and heritage walks in KEM. A record 2500 procedures were conducted by the Department of Cardiology in the catheterisation laboratory along with several novel procedures. The Department of Microbiology received ISO accreditation for their virology and immunology divisions. KEM hospital is now recognized at Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization, Multi faculty Research Unit as well as RRC of National Knowledge Commission. These are all funded by the Government of India. The Departments of Urology and Nephrology were successful in performing swap renal transplant. The Neonatology Department was recognized as a regional collaborative center for facility-based newborn care. The nurses of the institute received the Mayor’s award for their contributions. The preventive and social medicine department was instrumental in linking 35 rural centers to the telemedicine facility.

A glorious paradox of an educational institute is that while the alumni grow old, the Alma Mater grows, forever young. In 2016, marching towards centenary celebrations in 2026, several planned developments in KEM will constructively change the twin institutes for the betterment of patient care, greater efficiency of its enormous staff, sounder training of students and resident medical doctors, teaching faculty and not to forget, the support staff. In the words of Jesse Jackson “We have removed the ceiling above our dreams. There are no more impossible dreams”.

Long Live GS and KEM !
