Department of Neurology

Background History

The Department of Neurology was established in 1956 by Dr. E. P. Bharucha and Dr. V. P. Mondkar and has flourished over the years to the present status,rendering the best possible patient care, teaching and continuing various academic activities.
Stalwarts like Dr. E. P. Bharucha , Dr. V. P. Mondkar and Dr. P. U. Shah have headed the department in the past and at present this illustrious tradition has been carried forward by Dr.S.H.Ravat.

The motto of the department has been to give best possible patient Care, Student Education and Clinical Research.


Research ProjectsResearch and Publications:-The research activity is carried all year round. There are at least three major research projects going on in the department at any given time. The major research projects are generally carried out by the Research Fellows in the department and are supervised by one of the faculty Members. The other research activities are carried out by the resident doctors. All the doctors registered for their post doctoral degree course in Neurology have to complete one research project as a part of their thesis and publish at least two papers in an Indexed Journal. The other research work is published as in the annual conferences of Indian Academy of Neurology and Indian epilepsy society and Neurology society of India.

  1. “An open-label, randomized, parallel-group, multi-center study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Enoxaparin Versus Unfractionated Heparin in the prevention of Venous Thrombolism in patients following Acute Ischemic Stroke.” Prevail (Clexane) Trial
  2. “An open label, non comparative, multicentric study to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of Lyrica (Pregabalin) in neuropathic pain” – Pregabalin Trial
  3. “An open, Multicentric non-comparative study to analyze the risk benefits of treatment with Phenobarbitone in adult epileptic patients” – Gardenal Trial
  4. “A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled, parallel group, multicentre, 36 week trial to assess the efficacy and safety of adjunct Mycophenolate Mofetile(MMF) to maintain or improve symptom control with reduced corticosteriod in subjects with active Myasthenia Gravis” – MMF Trial
  5. “A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, 4 parallel groups, dose-ranging trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of brivaracetam used as adjunctive treatment at doses of 5, 20, and 50mg/day in b.i.d. administration (oral tablets of 2.5 or 10 mg) for a maximum of 7 weeks in subjects from 16 to 65 years with refractory epilepsy suffering from partial onset whether or not secondarily generalized” – Brivaracetam Trial
