Blood Bank
The Blood Bank of the K.E.M. Hospital, named the BOMBAY MUNICIPAL BLOOD CENTRE (SHANTILAL MATHURDAS BLOOD CENTRE), is the largest blood bank in Mumbai and one of the largest blood centres in Asia. Almost 30,000 units of blood are collected annually and separated into components viz. Red cell concentrates, Plasma, Platelets and Antihaemophilic cryoprecipate. It is also closely linked to the National Plasma Fractionation Centre (NPFC), an autonomous institute located in the K.E.M. Hospital, which manufactures plasma products viz Albumin, Gammaglobulin and Factor IX complex concentrate.
The Blood Bank is licenced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is also a member of the Federation of Bombay Blood Banks (FBBB). The K.E.M. Blood Bank collects approximately one-fourth of all the blood collected by the 31 members affiliated to the FBBB.
