The echo lab at KEM has one State of art Color Doppler machine, one 2D Echo machine and a Black and white Doppler Machine. The color Doppler is a Hewlett Packard Sonos 1000 system with 2.0, 2.5, 5.5,and 7.5 MHz probes and a omniplane transesophageal probe attached to it. The echo lab runs from morning 9 am to 8pm in the evening five days a week with a separate day on Friday only for pediatric work. Annually 10,000 echoes are performed here, with 5000 rheumatic cases, 3000 pediatric cases, 1000 ischemic heart disease cases , 100 fetal echoes, 400 transesophageal studies and 500 other studies which include stress Echo. The echoes are primarily performed by a Senior resident with all the cases supervised by a consultant. All the echoes are recorded and the data is stored on a computerised system on a database program ECHOREX.
