Introduction
The Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Diamond Jubilee Society Trust was established in 1989 with the following objectives:
A) To undertake scientific, social and statistical research in the field of health, medicine and applied science. Benefits arising out of results of the research undertaken by the trust would be extended to the poor and needy sector of the community, especially the slums dwellers and the working class in textile and other industries in Mumbai, catered by our public hospital as well as to the patient population at large.
B) To promote medical education and to continually offer opportunities of upgrading knowledge, skills in the context of innovations, research and discovery in all fields of health.
C) To provide medical relief and undertake development programmes in health services and upgrading health care facilities to various sectors of the society.
The trust accepts donations to support the medical education and health facilities of Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital developed for the poor and the needy, the men-on-the-street. Donations to the trust are exempted under section 80G of the Income Tax Act 1961. The FCRA, Govt. of India, Ministry of Home Affairs has given the Trust permission to receive and utilize foreign contribution. The Trust has been recognized as SIRO, by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Activities of the trust
Diamond Jubilee Society Trust was able to collect substantial amount of donations in th is year Rs.1,87,52,684/- ( inclusive of Foreign donations converted in Rs. 37,95,902/- ) were received as donation.
Patient care
To strengthen the services offered by the institute to patients,
1. Donations were given in form of essential equipments, accessories and consumables worth Rs. 3,46,039.95 to 12 departments , laboratories and intensive care units as per their requirements.
2. EMS facilities are being supported through the collections of Sanyog Ganesh.
3. Essential drugs were supplied to patients suffering from fever in mansoon
4. Fully automated Biochemistry autoanalyser was purchased by the Department of Endocrinology through the grant deposited in DJST.
5. Donations were accepted for making sitting arrangements for relatives of patients and renovation of the operation theatre.
Medical education
Donations for the following activities pertaining to students were deposited in DJST
1. Certificate course in Clinical Research for undergraduates conducted by Department of Clinical Pharmacology
2. Summer training program for students of science faculty conducted by Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics
3. Zonal Pharmacology Quiz at Mumbai, 2006 organized by the department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics
4. The students who have excelled in their academic career are awarded prizes and scholarships (n=28) by the trust. The list of awardees of this year is printed in this issue elsewhere. Funds for this purpose are donated by many past students and teachers of the institute in memory of their dear ones.
5. Donations were generated for the co-curricular programme for the students termed as ‘Shidori’.7. Interns Convocation programme for the June 2000 batch was held under the auspices of DJST.
Faculty development programmes
1. Activities of Academic Committee such as curriculum reforms, orientation programmes for residents and preparation related to NAAC were supported through donations received.
2. 2 nd GSMC FAIMER Regional Institute programme by ME Unit
3. 4 th and 5 th Certificate course in Medical Education Technology by ME Unit.
4. e-library of Department of gastroenterology Surgery was started through donation received in DJST.
5. Donations have been received for workshops conducted by the individual Departments, which include
i. Pulmonary Functional Testing workshop by Department of Chest Medicine
ii. Indo-US workshop on ‘Clinical Trials and Clinical Research’ by Department of Clinical Pharmacology.
iii.15 th Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery workshop by Department of ENT
iv. Workshops on ‘Basic Arthroscopy Workshop’, ‘Basic Spine Workshop’, ‘Advanced Spine Workshop’ and ‘Cadaveric Exposure Workshop’ by Department of Anatomy and Department of Orthopaedics
v. Live workshop on Phonomicrosurgery -Improving results in surgery (IRIS 2006) by ENT.
vi. Training Workshop on Emergency Medicine and Disaster Perparedness by EMS .
vii. Laproscopic Training Programme by Department of Surgical Gastroenterology.
viii. Workshops on ‘Neonatal Resuscitation’ and ‘Neonatal Ventilation’ by Department of Neonatology.
ix .Hands-on training course in Gynaec workshop by Department of Anatomy.
x.The Female Pelvis:Clinical Anatomy Revisited workshop by Department of Anatomy in collaboration with Department of Obsttrics and Gynaecology.
xi. Symposia on ‘Challenges in Drug Development’ and ‘Perspectives of Drug Development’ conducted by Departments of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Paediatrics, and PSM
Medical Research
1. The Trust has received donations for 29 research projects of various departments
2. in addition it has received two grants from abroad viz. i. from Family Health International of Bill Gates Foundation for PSM Department and ii.from NIH, USA for Clinical Pharmacology Department.
3. To inculcate spirit of research in medical postgraduates, 3 research proposals were selected for award of research grant after reviewing the proposals by 3 independent reviewers (from outside institutions).
Publication
1. Annual Report of Seth G.S. Medical College & K.E.M. Hospital-2005 was published under the aegis of Diamond Jubilee Society.
2. Donations were received for publication of GOSUMAG-2006
3. Donations were also accepted for publication of manuals/ abstract books of courses, workshops and conferences conducted by the departments and the institute
Contribution from Alumni
1. Donation was received from Dr. Uday Gadgil, Dr. Sharad Gogte and Dr. Ajit Phadke for upgradation of Lecture Theatre of Physiology.
2. Donation received from GOSUMEC Foundation, USA towards the LCD Projector for the Anesthesiology Department.
3. Donations were also received from alumni from India and abroad towards GOSUMAG, the magazine published by studentas and also for their cultural activities
4. Alumni have extendedsupport towards activities of Gosumec alumni Association and its scientific and cultural meet- GOSUMEET 06.
Work environment
1. Website of the institute to propagate the activities of the institute and facilitate communication and interaction with other medical professionals is being supported.
2. This year additional support was extended for internet and intranet services to the various departments.
3. Server in MS building was donated
2. Assistance for maintenance of front lawn and garden in the KEM campus
3. Assistance for repair and maintenance of the computer of Nurses Home
