Aims and Objectives of the Department of
Hematology
Routine Care
The Department provides out patient services for new cases and for follow-up of old cases twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. However, patients are also routinely seen every day if they have been referred to the hospital from outstation, or if they have any acute problem.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care
The members of the staff perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients suffering from the various hematological disorders such as anemias, leukemias, lymphomas, myelomas, etc. The centre is affiliated to the Hemophilia Society of Mumbai, and caters to the therapeutic needs of about 350 patients in and around Mumbai.
Research
The twin institutes of KEM Hospital and the Seth G. S. Medical College are teaching institutes with a lot of clinical material. This is utilized for the continuous process of both undergraduate and postgraduate training. Dr. Anil V. Pathare, who is a Professor in Hematology and Head of the Department, is a recognized undergraduate and postgraduate teacher since 1990 in the subject of General Medicine [Hematology]. His assistant, Dr. Farah F.Jijina, who is an Associate Professor, is an undergraduate as well as a postgraduate teacher in the subject of Gen. Medicine [Hematology] since 1994. Dr. Asha S. Shah, Lecturer in Hematology is also a teacher for undergraduates in the subject of Gen. Medicine [Hematology] since 1994. The Department has a close liaison with the Institute of Immunohaematology [ICMR] and there are many collaborative research projects in the field of hemoglobinopathies, bleeding disorders and thrombophilia with this Institute. Students from the Department of Medicine and Paediatrics are regularly sent on rotation for special training in the subject of Hematology. There is also a regular exchange of ideas and experience with the twin institutes of the Tata Memorial Hospital as well as the Institute of Immunohematology given the close proximity of both these institutions. The undergraduate and the postgraduate medical teaching programmes also incorporates a fixed lecture schedule in Hematology which are taken by Dr. Anil V. Pathare , Dr. Farah F.Jijina and Dr. Asha S. Shah. Seminars [Saturdays] and Journal clubs[Wednesdays] are also held regularly once a week for the resident doctors in the Department and are also attended by faculty members from the Institute of Immunohematology [Dr. D. Mohanty & Dr K. Ghosh.]

Hematology O.P.D was established
in 1971. It has over 28,500 cases registered with it as on 31.3.1998.The
out patient department service is provided twice a week to old and new patients
on every Monday and Thursday. A register is maintained for proper follow-up
of all cases. All interesting cases and patients with a hematological diagnosis
are systematically examined and investigated. There is a separate proforma
sheet in which the details of this examination and investigations are entered
and carefully filled for future follow-up and reference. In addition all
this data is also computerized for easy access and study.

Intensive Hematological Emergency Care
service
Serious patients with bleeding manifestations
like cases of HEMOPHILIA & BLEEDING DISORDERS, etc are admitted round
the clock for their diagnosis and management. The hematological laboratory
provides the backing for handling these emergency cases.

25 beds in Ward 42 situated on the 10th floor of the new multistory building are exclusively meant for the care of all the hematology patients (Males, females and children)
There is a ward side laboratory where routine blood counts, urine and stool examination is carried out by the residents. Treatment room with facilities to carry out bone-marrow aspiration, bone-marrow biopsy, splenic aspiration, lumbar puncture, intra- theacal chemotherapy, intravenous chemotherapy, blood transfusions, blood component therapy like FFP, Cryoprecipitate and platelet transfusions etc. is available. All chemotherapy & component therapy is administered using disposables. Facilities of cell separator, to carry out platelet apheresis and plasmapheresis is also available.
Besides inpatient treatment, a substantial number of patients are given chemotherapy on an OPD basis in the ward treatment rooms according to the various protocols.

Postgraduate Laboratory;
The Department has a laboratory of its own. The laboratory is situated on the 10th floor of the new multistory building of the KEM Hospital. It has 5000 sq. ft of plinth area. For all patients referred to the department, blood is usually collected by the laboratory staff, for the investigations ordered by the hematology on-call doctor. Reports of most investigations are given to the patients on the same evening, & appropriate treatment advised.

Special Studies
Comprehensive Hemophilia Care Services
The Department of hematology in collaboration with the Hemophilia Society
of Mumbai, provides a comprehensive care for all the hemophilia patients
in and around Mumbai.
The Department maintains a
separate register of Hemophilia patients that are registered with it and
conducts a special outpatient clinic once a week every Thursdays on the
10th floor of the MS Building at 11.00 am. In addition to the
staff members of the department the clinic is attended by two consultants
from the Institute of Immuno- haematology, a representative of the Hemophilia
Society of Mumbai, and the physiotherapist attached to the centre. There
is an on campus referral service from the Dentist, the Orthopedician, and
Surgeon as well.
