INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUND: There is no formal structured training in the field of Emergency Medicine in India, though in the western countries, Emergency Medicine is a well recognized speciality with separate Residency Programme. Recently, a well planned Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has been started at K.E.M.Hospital to cater to a work load of about 250-300 emergency referrals daily. This includes patients of Infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, Neurological disorders, Drug toxicities and poisonings. Occasionally, mass-casualties e.g. Food poisoning, ethanol toxicity are seen. The 5 bedded Acute Care Unit (ACU) has almost 100% occupancy and a variety of patients are treated here viz. Acute Myocardial Infarction, Stroke, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Acute flaccid paralysis, patients with respiratory failure , heart failure etc.
The EMS is supported by Emergency Laboratory, ECG, X-Ray and Sonography facilities. This comprehensive service and a wide spectrum of medical emergencies attended give a good opportunity for learning and training in the field of Emergency Medicine. Our Institution has taken the step of providing this training not only to doctors of the country, but also to foreign medical graduates.
