Neonatology

Courses Conducted, Major Activities And Services

1. DM in Neonatology: KEM Hospital is the only institution in western India and one of the three major institutions in India offering super specialty DM Neonatology course. Every year 2 post MD or post DNB (Pediatrics) students are selected by All India Common Entrance test held in the month of May / June (contact www.dmer.org & www.dmer.gov.in/)

These students are exposed to intensive and formal training in various aspects of Neonatology (Conventional- patient triggered ventilation, surfactant administration, total parenteral nutrition, routine as well as emergency neonatal ward work, outpatient work, training in allied specialties and superspecialities, fetal and neonatal Ultrasonography, Echocardiography, Neuroimaging, EEG, Administrative work, Teaching and training juniors, presenting papers and publishing scientific research, exchange of skills with fellow colleagues at other institutions of India, Neurodevelopmental assessment and managing High risk NICU graduates and Community Neonatology)

These Residents need to submit original research work as thesis for their DM Neonatology. Apart from the thesis, they are supposed to write one case report and or a short study every year for the three years training.

2. Training of Post Graduate Residents: Students who are Post MD or Post DCH or Post DNB come over to the department from various places in Maharashtra and other parts of India for special training in Neonatology for a period of 6 months to a year. In addition junior residents from Pediatrics & Obstetrics are posted in Neonatology for 3- 6 months during their post graduate tenure.
3. Training of Observers: Practicing Pediatricians from different parts of the country join for observing routine neonatal care practices and updating themselves for a period of 1 month to 3 months.

4. Nursing Training programme: Regular teaching sessions are held twice a week for staff nurses from NICU, PNC & LR. Nurses from in and around Mumbai come to the department for a period of one month for formal training in Neonatology.

The department is in forefront in teaching medical as well as paramedical personnel the art & science of Basic & Advanced Neonatal Care & has many workshops, training programs & conferences to its credit. The department has published various books (mentioned below) in the subject which are referred by postgraduate students & practicing pediatricians all over the country.
