PREVIOUS CAESAREAN SECTION: MANAGEMENT AND OUTCOME

Caesarean section continues to be one of the most important surgical interventions performed in obstetric practice. Data was recorded on structured proformae for all cases of previous caesarean sections admitted in KEM Hospital from 1st August 2004 - 31st March 2005.

Booked cases : 501 (97.9%)
Referred cases : 140 (27.3%)
In labour on admission : 324 (63.3%)
Avg. time elapsed since last delivery : 40 ± 21.3 months
Avg. weeks of gestation : 37.4 ± 2.6 weeks
Avg. Hemoglobin on admission : 10.0 ± 1.3 gm/dl
Total Repeat Caesarean sections : 320 (62.5%)
Total vaginal deliveries : 192 (37.5%)
Planned vaginal deliveries : 278 cases (54.3%)

Post operative complications : 52 cases (16.3% of all sections)
Outcome of pregnancy in caesarean section : 315 live births (98.4%)
Outcome of pregnancy in vaginal delivery : 182 live births (94.8%)
Avg. baby weight in caesarean section delivery : 2606 ± 516 gms
Avg. baby weight in vaginal delivery : 2511 ± 570 gms
Duration of hospital stay in caesarean cases : 13 ± 7.32 days
Duration of hospital stay in vaginal delivery cases : 6 ± 5.07 days
