Occupational Therapy School and Center
Occupational therapy school and center was founded by Mrs. Kamala Nimbkar an American occupational therapist in the year 1950.
This school is the first Occupational Therapy school in Asia and it started with a diploma (D.O.T.) in Occupational therapy, which was a two years course. Today K.E.M. O.T. School and center is the biggest graduate and postgraduate training institute in India and is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
Teaching Program:
From current academic year the graduate level programme is four and a half years course and the student strength is forty students per batch. The prerequisite for the under graduate course is H.Sc. in science faculty. The institute admits ten students for the post graduate degree course. Specialization offered by the institute are Occupational therapy in neurological, orthopedics, pediatrics, hand injury, psychiatry, cardiovascular conditions and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Students from the institute have always excelled in the graduate and post graduate examinations and have been merit holders at the university examinations.
Occupational therapy school library is well equipped with the books and periodicals published by the national and inter national professional bodies.
The teaching faculty comprises of three posts of professors, three posts of associate professors and six posts of lecturers along with eight clinicians. Some of our teaching faculty have been conferred fellowship by the academic council of Occupational Therapy and a few are WHO expert advisors.
Special efforts are made to teach the students professional judgement and reasoning with lectures and ample clinical exposure. Graduate and postgraduate programs in Occupational Therapy offer students the opportunity to gain theoretical knowledge and clinical skills while keeping a strong emphasis on research. The ex students of this institute are holding senior posts and heading the institutes in India and abroad.
Facilities available and services offered by the department.
Occupational therapists play a major role in the assessment and treatment and rehabilitation of the physically and mentally handicapped individuals. The department has a biomedical workshop for construction of splints, braces and adaptive devices.
Along with acute care services and treatment, rehabilitation services are provided in the form of prevocational testing, training and sheltered workshop for the patients as well as promotion of activities of daily living skills (ADL) to gain maximum independence in life.
