III. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

1. SERVICES

The Pathology Department has the following sections and laboratories:


A) Haematology & Clinical Pathology services:

i) OPD 008
ii) Orthopaedic Laboratory

iv) Emergency medical services laboratory (24 hours service)

B ) Histopathology services:

i) General Surgical pathology

2. TEACHING

A. Undergraduate teaching :

1. IInd MBBS Students-About 400 students (3 terms).
Lectures : In general pathology, systemic pathology and clinical pathology - 4 lectures per week for lst and 2nd term students.
Practicals : In general pathology , systemic pathology, clinical pathology - 5 days in a week. Revision lectures and practicals for 3rd term students.

2. Occupational Therapy & physiotherapy (B.Sc.) Lectures and practical demonstrations in Pathology.

B. Post graduate teaching:

1. M.D.Pathology

Post graduate teaching and training programme consists of working in various laboratories such as clinical pathology and haematology, clinical biochemistry, blood bank, surgical pathology, neuropathology, cardio-vascular and lung pathology, paediatric pathology, gastrointestinal pathology by rotation. In addition, post graduate students have the assignments of carrying out autopsy examinations and emergency investigations. They participate in regular weekly teaching sessions of gross meetings, slide meetings, daily autopsy meetings and monthly journal reviews, case presentations, open forum discussions etc.

2. D.M.L.T. course

10 students per year. The course consists of 18 months - 3 terms. First two terms consists of lectures, practicals and regular practical training in various laboratories. Third term is entirely practical training in laboratories.

3. RESEARCH PROJECTS

The members of the faculty carry out many research projects independently and in collaboration with the clinical departments.

1. Dr. S. Divate : Detection of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies by an inhouse indirect immunofluorescence assay and assessment of neutrophil activation in ANCA associated neutrophils.
2. Dr. B.V.Mittal : Dr. A.F.Almeida & Dr. S.Badakere (in association with IIH & Dept.of Nephrology) : ANCA associated vasculitis DIF on renal biopsies.
3. Dr. Asha Shenoy (in association with CRI) : Immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of hedgehog and Wnt signallling cascade genes in human medulloblastoma.
