Preventive and Social Medicine
History
The Department of Preventive & Social Medicine was started at Seth G. S. Medical College in 1959. Comprehensive health care delivery program Ward Office. The first major contribution was in 1964,when more than 10,00,000 vaccinations were carried out by KEM Hospital Staff and Interns under the guidance of the Department and the cholera epidemic was controlled.Mobile Health Units were first organized in the city of Mumbai by this Department. The Urban Health Center at Malvani,which is 33 kms away from the parent institute, was established in theyear 1978. It was developed as a field practice area not only for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Preventive and Social Medicine but is today used as field practice training area for nursing students from SNDT, RN Cooper,Bhagwati and Harkisandas Hospitals. It provides all promotive,preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.A significant role has been played by this department in setting up department of Family planning, IPP-V, Project and Bureau offices of Family Welfare in Municipal Corporation of Mumbai. It has been a trend setter in notable programmes like child to child, General practice of outpatient in Hospitals, evaluation projects like Evaluation of MCH programme with special reference to UIP, Impact evaluation of IPP-V project, continuing education and training in Epidemiology and Health Management.
