Services
Offered:
a) The department caters to an average of 7000 out patients per year. Total
indoor admissions per year are about 1100. About 2000 major and minor operations
are carried out per year.
b) Investigative Facilities offered by the department :
1. Ultrasonography : Urology department has its ultrasound machine where scans
of urological patients are done.
2. Urodynamic Studies (Uroflowmetry) : This laboratory, located in the department
helps in evaluating people with obstruction to -- urine
flow.
4. Doppler ultrasound : This investigation helps in evaluating patients with
infertility and following transplantation.
5. Radiological investigations like Retrograde Ureterogram and Retrograde
Pyelogram.
6. Uro-endoscopy
7. Phallodynamic Studies (Impotence Studies).
8. Drug Trials : Prior to the release of drugs in India, pharmaceutical companies
carry out clinical trials of drugs in hospitals to-determine
their efficacy. Our department has carried out and is currently carrying out
such trials involving many urological drugs.
KEM Hospital Urology department has a state of art Dornier Lithotripter (to
break kidney stones without surgery). This is amongst the best such machine
in India. It caters to a total of 350 new patients per year.
Our department carries out live and cadaveric renal transplants regularly
and is among the oldest institutes in India for kidney transplantation starting
transplantation way back in 1965.
PCCL(Percutaneous Cystolithotrity) is a technique to remove large bladder
stones by making a I cm. cut in the suprapubic region.
Using this method, open surgery for urinary bladder stone can be avoided.
Our department offers this facility to our patients.
Laparoscopy in urology is a new upcoming modality, which is being started
in major urological departments in India. Our department too has started offering
laparoscopic procedures to our patients. We perform laparoscopic ureterolithotomies,
Lap. Nephrectomies etc.We have also procured Laparoscopy Trainer to train
postgraduate students in basic Lap. procedures before they perform them on
patients.
