Psychiatry

History

The Department of Psychiatry, Seth G.S.M.C. & K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai, was established in December 1947 – just after India became independent. From a humble beginning with a single psychiatrist – Dr. N. S. Vahia, it has grown into one of the largest teaching departments. The Outpatient services began in 1947 and within a span of 3 years, regular in-patient services commenced.

In addition to patient care, it is active in education and research for which it has received support from WHO and UNDCP.
