Background History

Combined Radiology and Surgery Department (1945-1960)
The department was established as a combined department of radiology and surgery under the guidance of Dr. Jinabhai Desai. After his retirement in 1945, the department was headed by Dr. Joseph. In 1950, Dr. L. H. Athalye became the Head of the Department.
During this period, an X Ray machine by Victor corporation was in use. Gradually, there was addition of superficial and deep x ray radiation therapy. Two screening fluoroscopy machines were installed for medical and minor surgical OPDs. Around the 1960s Dr. Prafullakumar Sen who was the head of surgery, was awarded the Rockefeller grant for starting cardiac and vascular angiography.

Education : The Beginnings : Combined Radiology and Electrotherapy (upto 1967)
The course started as a Diploma in Medical Radiology and Electrotherapy (DMRE), which was later branched out into Diploma in Diagnostic Radiology (DMRD) and Diploma in Therapeutic Radiology (DMRT).

Department of Radiodiagnosis (from 1967)
In 1967, the course of MD Radiodiagnosis was started by the University of Bombay

Dr. Madhav Kelkar headed the department until 1990.
