Patient Care
Anesthesia
Anaesthesiology department catered to 43 operation theater tables located in 15 OT complexes. Anaesthesia services were given to about 50,000 surgical patients & the department catered to 20,000 Anaesthesia OPD patients for pre-operative evaluation. The department has special post-operative pain relief services and Anaesthesia intensive care unit.
Biochemistry
Central clinical biochemistry laboratory performed more than 10,00,000 tests. More than 3,00,000 tests were done for emergency medical services. Two automated biochemical autoanalysers were purchased.
Blood Bank
During the period July to November, a total of 7147 platelet units were prepared. Of these, 3688 platelet units were issued free of cost to monsoon related febrile illness patients. During the same period, 109 blood donation camps were held of which 59 were held at Dadar Railway Station. 2711 blood units were collected from this site alone. 2711 platelet units were also prepared.
Cardiology
Uptil Dec 2007, the department has performed more than 2000 procedures in cath lab which include : 1081 coronary angiographies, 37 check angiographies, 80 diagnostic catheterizations, 223 balloon mitral valvotomies, 20 BPVs , 87 PTCA with stents, 115 electrophysiology studies of which 62 were with radio-frequency ablation, 113 pacemaker implants, 7 explants, and different closures. More than 1,20,000 ECGs were recorded in the year, more than 5000 colour doppler studies done, and 500 CSTs were performed. 1408 patients were admitted in ICU during the year.
Chest Medicine
The total number of admissions till Dec was 730. Of these, 252 patients required Intensive Care. The Department of Chest Medicine has outpatients’ Chest clinic on bi weekly basis. More than 4500 new patients and 13000 old patients have been seen on an outpatient basis. The mortality rate is 6.16%. The IRCU mortality rate has shown a decreasing trend from 20% in 2005 to 15% in 2007. The Pulmonary Function Testing Laboratory performed more than 4000 investigations comprising of FV loops, PEFRs, DLCOs , RV/TLC and others. More than 50000 ABG analyses were also performed. The department also performed 154 bronchoscopies , 35 pleural taps, 23 sleep studies and other procedures. Since this year, the transbronchial biopsies have been fluoroscopically guided.
Asthma Education
The department of chest medicine has an asthma education programme for indoor, and outdoor patients. In addition, the EPRC team is also involved in creating asthma awareness and education of school children.
The EPRC team provides a special service to the BMC wherein an annual respiratory morbidity survey of BMC employees working in the chlorination department and sewage pumping stations is also conducted. The details of these surveys are published in the Environmental Status Report. The environment pollution research centre conducts regular surveys and health check ups in response to citizen complaints as well.
Clinical Pharmacology
Therapeutic Drug monitoring services:
This year, in the TDM outpatient clinic for epileptic patients, a total of 3475 patients were seen. There were 1949 follow up patients and 1526 new patients. Blood level estimations were done for phenytoin, phenobarbitone, carbamazepine, carbamazepine epoxide, valproic acid and lamotrigine. For patients with bronchial asthma, a total of 45 samples were done for estimation of levels of theophylline. In collaboration with the department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, 70 patients on stable doses of warfarin were tested for blood levels of warfarin and its hydroxyl metabolite. A total of 126 lithium patients were seen (101 follow up and 25 new cases).
Adverse drug reaction monitoring centre, Govt. of India :
A total of 664 reports were generated at the Department (South West Zonal centre for ADR Monitoring). All of these have been submitted to the office of the Drugs Controller General of India , Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Malaria diagnosis and admissions in ward 24:
A total of 15133 slides were screened. 1461 were positive (9.6%) P.vivax- 1112 (76.1%) P. falciparum- 327(22.38%). Mixed infections- 22 (1.5%). A total of 50 P.vivax patients, 7 falciparum and 2 mixed infections were admitted.
New services added
The department has started DNA extraction services for the institution free of cost. At the present moment, two departments- endocrinology and pediatrics avail of this facility. DNA has been extracted so far for 25 patients and banked pending genetic analysis. These patients are of Gaucher’s disease, Wilkinson’s disease and Type 1 diabetes.
CVTS
Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at K. E. M. Hospital specializes in diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the heart, aorta, great vessels and lungs. The Cardiovascular surgery staff has special training and interest in Complete Arterial Revascularization , Beating Heart Coronary Bypass , Complex Congenital Heart Diseases , Heart Valve surgery , Maze procedure for Atrial Fibrillation , Thoracic and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm , Peripheral Vascular Disease and Thoracic surgery.
Outpatient Services
Four Outpatient Clinics are conducted every week in the afternoons at CVTC, ground floor with Dr AMP’s unit managing Mondays and Wednesdays and Dr NBA’s unit managing Tuesdays and Fridays. New patients as well as follow-up patients are seen in the OPD. The follow up clinics are especially important for those who have undergone valve replacement surgery and need their anticoagulation management under supervision. During 2007, 3333 new cases were evaluated for various Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular ailments. (Old cases – 11375)
Dermatology/ Skin
The department has introduced newer peel techniques -
Currently, Dermarollers are used for treatment of atrophic scars . The department also performs non surgical face lift using radio frequency.
Endocrinology
Uptil Dec 2007, there has been 286 admissions and more than 27000 patients seen on an outpatient basis in the various clinics : diabetes clinic (14318) , thyroid clinic(7730) and puberty and growth clinic (3959). A total of 6345 new patients were seen. More than 90000 investigations were performed in the endocrinology laboratory comprising of more than 54000 biochemical investigations and 34000 hormonal assays. More than 25000 blood sugar estimations and 1000 HbA1c assays were performed by the laboratory. The other investigations performed include lipid profile, liver profile, renal profile and mineral level estimations. The different hormones assayed include T3, T4, TSH, FSH , LH, PRL , Testosterone, Cortisol, HGH, AMA, ACTH, PTH, IGF1, IGFBP 3, Vit D, DPD, SHB G, Estradiol, O-calcin, F T3, F T4, anti TPO, beta HCG, TRAP.
The diabetes OPD runs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays; Thyroid OPD on Thursdays and Fridays ; P&G clinic on Fridays and Saturdays and Obesity clinic on Saturdays.
New services
Department of Endocrinology has started 2 new out patient departments (OPD).
1. Gestational Diabetes Mellitus OPD
A GDM OPD for pregnant patients who are diagnosed to have Diabetes mellitus.
2. Type 1 Diabetes OPD: This OPD is geared towards comprehensive care of Type 1 Diabetes patients.
ENT
The Dept of ENT is well equipped in patient care. The dept of ENT has two fully functional units. To attend to the increasing number of patients there are 6 resident and 4 consultant stations. The department is equipped with microscope facilities with suctions and emergency life saving equipments in the OPD. Every patient is guided through a fixed entry door and as his examination is over he leaves through the exit. This ensures a free flow of patients without congestion. All our residents and consultants are courteous to the patients. The patients for surgery are explained about the procedures in details and then given the earliest appointment. Rarely do our patients get postponed. Minor emergency cases are given appointments in the evening in the ENT OT. Our residents are on call as per rotations of call duty.

Gastroenterology
The Gastroenterology O.P.D. is conducted thrice a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in the morning. More than 11000 patients have attended the OPD services of which nearly 3500 are new patients. More than 1000 patients have been admitted to the ward and 1360 referrals from other wards. Until Dec 2007, 2931 upper GI scopies, 459 colonoscopies, 204 ERCPs, and 130 liver biopsy procedures have been carried out. The department has also performed the following therapeutic procedures : Esophageal Variceal Band / Loop Ligation (450), Esophageal Variceal Sclerotherapy (350) , Esophageal Dilatation (150) , Bleeding Ulcer Injection (110) , Endoscopic biliary sphincterotomy and drainage (105), Gastric varices injection with glue (40) , Foreign Body removal (25) , Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (12) , Endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy and drainage (10), Polypectomy (10) , Endoscopic clipping for bleeding lesions/ polyps (10), Pancreatic cyst drainage (9) , and Esophageal Prosthesis Placement (5).
Special Investigations
Esophageal pHmetry was done in 20 patients. Esophageal Manometry was done in 202 patients. Special services for patients: 24-h emergency service, especially for patients with GI bleeds, pancreatitis, cholangitis and liver disease complications.
General Surgery
Outpatient services
The department offers daily OPD services where more than 1,00,000 patients are seen annually. Special Tumor OPD is held on Monday afternoon which offers comprehensive care to cancer patients. Awareness programs on breast cancer are also held.
Operations
The department does more than 6000 major & 12,000 minor operations including both emergency & elective procedures. The operations include general surgical procedures, basic laparoscopic procedures, complex hepatobiliopancreatic surgeries, advanced laparoscopic procedures, endocrine surgeries & oncological procedures. The Department has the largest published series of Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy in India & largest series of Laparoscopic Splenectomy & targeted parathyroidectomy in western India. With collapse of the peripheral hospitals the department provides emergency surgical services to all patients who have been referred from these centers.
Endoscopic services
Though three departments offer upper GI endoscopy services in the Hospital, the department of General Surgery is the only one to provide emergency upper GI endoscopy services. Annually more than 3000 procedures are carried out.
Intensive care
The department manages a six bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit & a five bed Emergency Surgical Intensive care unit. The ICU’s had a total no of 784 admissions with more than 50% of the patients requiring ventilatory care.
Hematology
D r. J. C. Patel Hematology Department, K.E.MHospital
Patients requiring indoor admissions are admitted to Ward 42 (25 bed strength) on the 10th floor, New Multistory Building. There are daily routine and emergency admissions of patients with all hematological disorders, bleeding disorders and other hematological emergencies. The department also runs a chemotherapy service for patients of hematological malignancies. This is done both on an indoor and an out patient basis as a day care service. Until Dec 2007 there were 651 admissions and 56 deaths. Majority of patients admitted include those with aplastic anaemia and thalassemias. More than 6000 patients have availed of the outpatient services.

This includes patients of: Thalessemia for blood transfusions, Bone marrow failure syndromes for blood & platelet transfusion , Hemophilia’s & other coagulation disorders for factor treatment and physical therapy , Platelet disorders for transfusions and Leukemias & lymphomas for chemotherapy, oral, I,V, & Intrathecal. More than 7500 patients have availed of these services.
Hematology Laboratory
The Hematology Laboratory is situated on the 10th Floor, Multistory Building. Various tests such as hemogram (8000) , bone barrow aspiration (800) , biopsies, hemolytic workup (13000) , haemostatic work up (2500) and iron studies (240) are done.

Microbiology
Till Nov 2007 the ICTC has processed 26747 blood specimens for HIV , 5098 for CD4 counts, 5403 for HBsAg detection and1305 for HCV detection. The bacteriology section has processed 58883 specimens for aerobic bacteria, 563 for anaerobic bacteria and performed sterility checks on, 7251 samples. The mycobacteriology section has screened 14283 samples from indoor patients for the presence of AFB by microscopy, cultured 3431 specimens for Mycobacteria, investigated under RNTCP Microscopy Centre 4335 patients for diagnosis and 600 patients for follow up and performed TBPCR on 65 specimens . The serology section performed 2395 Widal tests, 4904 VDRL tests, 1399 RA tests and 587 ASO tests. 4762 serum specimens were screened by a rapid test for leptospirosis and 3770 for dengue. IgM ELISA for leptospirosis and dengue was performed on 485 and 358 specimens respectively. More than 100 specimens each of suspected leptospirosis and dengue were sent for PCR to the molecular diagnostic laboratory at Kasturba Hospital. The mycology section has processed 2992 specimens for microscopy and culture. The parasitology section has processed 5946 stool specimens for routine parasites, 130 for opportunistic parasites and processed 129 specimens for Pneumocystis.
Neonatology
The Department of Neonatology is located on the 10 th floor of New M.S.Building and has a bed strength of 37 and total area of 6275.50 sq. feet. It is divided into 4 sections, A is the inborn aseptic neonatal care area admeasuring 1000 sq ft with a bed strength of 13 , B is the inborn septic area measuring 450 sq ft with a bed strength of 11, C is the intermediate care area measuring 450 sq ft with a bed strength of 9 and V with 4 beds is the ventilatory care area. An additional 1378 sq ft has been provided for support service. There is also provision for the mothers of the newborns.
Human Milk Bank: Human milk bank is an institution established for the purpose of collecting, screening , processing, storing & distributing donated human milk that is dispensed to recipients who are not the biological off springs of the donor mother.
Kangaroo MotherCareCenter: The department is selected as the center of excellence for initiating Kangaroo Mother Care for Low Birth Weight babies in India, the first & one of the three centers in the country. Low birth weight babies discharged from NICU are regularly followed up here for growth, nutritional status, neuromotor, neurodevelopmental, & neurosensory assessment & early intervention therapy is instituted when required.
The procedures performed here include Intensive care, Ventilation, Total Parenteral Nutrition , Partial Parenteral Nutrition , Exchange Transfusion , Phototherapy , Kangaroo Mother Care, ROP screening of all premature babies and Hearing screening.

Nephrology
The Nephrology Department provides outdoor, indoor and emergency care for patients suffering from renal diseases. Facilities available are clinical nephrology, dialysis, transplantation and laboratory. Till Nov 2007, there have been 1663 indoor admissions, and 5700 referred patients. 112 kidney biopsies, 30 peritoneal dialysis, 6585 hemodialysis and 6 CAPDs have been performed. 20 renal transplants have also been performed.
Neurosurgery
The department provides advanced neurosurgical care. Complex tumors, vascular lesions and congenital spinal disorders are treated. 1469 surgeries were performed using operating microscope, and micro-instruments. Video EEG and neuropsychological assessment is available for evaluation of epilepsy patients. Radionics CRW Stereotaxy apparatus is available to perform deep brain biopsies and functional neurosurgery. Brainlab Neuronavigation system has been installed for image guided cranial and spinal surgeries. Operative mortality is less than 2% and the hospital acquired infection rate is nil.
Nursing
The nursing department has specialized clinical nurses in various fields such as Pediatrics, Neonatology, Psychiatry, Stoma therapy, Oncology, Burns, and Operation Theater techniques. Nurses qualified in Diploma in Hospital Administration, Diploma in Nursing education & Administration, I.C.U. Nursing and B.Sc. Nursing are also available. They are placed in respective departments. Some Nursing Tutors have also specialized with Masters Degree in Pediatric Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing and Community Health Nursing. The department forms the backbone of patient care services being provided by the hospital. As per Indian Nursing Council recommendations all student nurses are posted in all the clinical areas of the hospital in rotation and are trained to provide quality care under the supervision of Sr. Tutors, Ward Sisters, Trained Staff & Doctors. Special service is also provided in emergency situations such as disaster management during monsoon and bomb blast by all trained staff nurses and student nurses.
OBGY
There were 1767 confinements of which 387 were cesarean sections and 61 were operative vaginal deliveries. Also, 1143 obstetric operations and 772 gynaecological operations were performed. More than 9707 gynaecologic and 6488 obstetric cases were seen in the OPD and 1866 gynaecological indoor patients and 7305 obstetric indoor patients were treated. Special clinics like infertility OPD and family planning OPD are conducted. More than 8378 cytological smears were done for cancer detection at the N. A. Purandare Gynaecological and Obstetric Research Centre. This department has been recognized as a centre of excellence for PPTCT services by NACO.
New facilities provided: Minimal Access surgery and TransObturator tape surgery for SUI.
Ophthalmology
This department has an out-patient department & operations are being performed in operation theatre on all days. It has a Special Ward for keratoplasty patients. It gives complete eye care in the form of various ophthalmic procedures like contact lens, intraocular lens implantation, keratoplasty, fluorescin angiography & vitreo retinal surgery. Diagnostic facilities with ultrasound, slit lamp, perimeter & fundus cameras are available for out patients and for those specially referred. There is a well established “Eye Bank” with facilities for enucleation, and storages for future use of the eyeballs. This department is a well known centre for diseases of the posterior segment of eye. It has facilities for colour and fluorescin in fundus photography. Photocoagulation is presently done with the Argon Laser Photocoagulation. Upto Nov 2007, the department has admitted 3000 patients and performed 1865 operations.
Orthopedics
Orthopaedic department performs over 3000 major and 2000 minor surgeries including 300 joint replacements, 200 arthroscopy cases and 500 spine cases. 100 new cases are seen in the outpatient department on a daily basis besides the old cases.

Pathology
The Department of Pathology, besides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, has the largest number of laboratory services rendered to the patients and these for the sake of convenience are housed in different areas of the hospital. The Outpatient Department Laboratory situated in MSB, Ground Floor provides clinical pathology and hematological investigations. This laboratory has performed 224495 hemograms, 3210 coagulation profiles and examined 59348 urine specimens. The laboratory situated at the OrthopedicCenter has performed 65,832 hemograms, 90 Coagulation profiles and screened 2821 urine specimens. The Emergency Services Laboratory (EMS Ground Floor) has performed 105423hemograms, 8549 Coagulation profiles (PT), 2086 Routine cerebrospinal fluid examinations and 38355 arterial blood gas analysis. The Clinical & Hematology Laboratory (MSB Sixth Floor) has performed 64540 hemograms, 30129 Routine urine examinations, and 2412 routine body fluid examinations. The neuropathology laboratory (MSB Sixth Floor) has performed 1018 hemograms, 1610 routine cerebrospinal fluid examination, and 2520 biochemical investigations on body fluids. The CVTC Laboratory 315 (CVTC Building First Floor) has performed 82300 hemograms, 14200 coagulation profiles (PT), 2780 routine urine examinations, 170 routine body fluid examinations, 18700 lipid profiles, 2500 creatine phosphokinase & its isoenzyme estimation and 100 serum amylase estimations. The Immunology Laboratory ( CVTC Building, Lab 316, First Floor) has performed 6713 high sensitivity C-reactive protein assays, 2469 samples have been analysed for complement factors, 826 for rheumatoid factor. 302 serum immunoglobulin estimations and 26 cryoglobulin estimations have also been carried out. The laboratory also provides the following specialized investigations: Anticardiolipin antibody estimation(1576) and analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage (19)
Histopathological Services- The Surgical Pathology Laboratory (LibraryBuilding Second Floor) is further divided into various sub-specialties which are: the General Surgical, Gastrointestinal , Hepatic, Renal and Pediatric Sections. 8751 histopathology specimens and 240 frozen sections were processed and analysed. 197 kidney biopsies and 216 bone marrow biopsies were also studies. Immunofluorescence staining was carried out on 65 specimens and special stains 1488. The Neuropathology Laboratory (MSB Sixth Floor) processed 182 frozen sections and 1025 biopsies. The CVTC Laboratory 116 (CVTCBuilding First Floor) analysed 20 biopsies and 506 excisions. 1239 autopsies were performed during the year. From these, tissues from 559 autopsies were processed routinely, 250 at the pediatric histopathology section, 168 at the neuropathology section and 262 at the cardiopulmonary section.
Cytopathology Services: The Cytology Laboratory (LibraryBuilding Second Floor) performed and analysed 3950 fine needle aspirations.1384 fluids were also analysed for malignant cells. The CVTC Laboratory 116 (CVTCBuilding First Floor) performed cytological investigation on 706 sputum specimens and 51 fluids were screened for malignant cells.
Pediatrics
The services are provided round the clock by the three units. The paediatric intensive care unit caters to seriously ill patients. The mortality rate has been showing a decreasing trend over the years ( expressed as total deaths/total discharges 0.1 in 2001 to 0.093 in 2006)
A new speciality OPD titled ‘Pediatric Epilepsy Care Clinic’ for children suffering from epilepsy, has been initiated since in June 2007.
Pediatric Surgery
The department offers pediatric surgical care services to neonates and children from day 1 of life to 12 years of age. Patients are referred to the department from all over the state of Maharashtra and other parts of the country too. In addition to the expertise and excellent results that were offered by open surgeries, the department also offers the same care in minimal access surgeries for the last three years. Approximately 10000 patients were seen during the year with 2000 admissions. 165 children needed ICU care. 1582 minor surgeries and 618 major surgeries were performed. There were also 58 Laparoscopic/ Thoracoscopy Surgeries. The mortality rate was 82 out of 2000. The nosocomial rate was 73/2000.

Physiotherapy
The physiotherapy department provided services to 31100 new outdoor patients and 55586 old patients. 62146 indoor patients also received physiotherapy ( 12126 admitted to CVTC, 34808 admitted to orthopedic center and 15212 admitted in other areas )
Plastic Surgery
Patient care
Round the clock Emergency Services are provided involving Maxillofacial injuries, Hand injuries, Skin cover for upper & lower limbs, Replantation & Revascularization of limbs and digits and acute burns in adult females. Besides routine plastic surgery, the department specializes in cleft lip and palate, complex vascular malformations of head, face & limbs, T. M. joint ankylosis, lymphedema, skin tumors, management of absent vagina , intersex related problems, microvascular surgery etc. The number of patients admitted and the surgeries performed is showing an increasing trend over the years ( admissions: 713 in 2001 to 929 in 2007; surgeries 2805 in 2001 to 3508 in 2007) . 8160 patients were seen in the outpatient department. The number of referrals from other departments is also increasingly steadily over the years with 2256 referrals in 2007. The mortality rate in the burns ward was 67.66%.

Psychiatry
There are two main sections of the department
A) General psychiatry – 60 beds
B) Bombay De-addiction centre of excellence - 30 beds
The department provides e mergency services, indoor facilities, outdoor facilities, investigations - Psychological & Medical , Pharmacotherapy, Electro Convulsive Therapy, Psychotherapy (Individual & Group), Behavior Therapy, Group Psychotherapy for family of mentally ill, Psycho educational program, and Occupational Rehabilitation . During the year, 5401 new patients and 19248 follow up cases were seen in the OPD. The numbers of indoor admissions were 508. 1250 EEGs were performed and 1065 ECTs were given.
Deaddiction Centre – 4368 patients availed of these services during the year. There were 211 admissions. 9015 samples were tested, 7467 for alcohol, 644 for morphine, 775 for cannabis, 76 for benzodiazepines and 54 for Mise.

A ‘Dementia Workshop’ group has been started this year for detailed evaluation, follow up and care . Counseling is conducted every Tuesday at 2.00 p.m. in Psychiatry OPD. A clinical and neuropsychological evaluation of patients with dementia is carried out in this.
Radiology
The department has performed more than 180000 routine X rays, 32156 USGs, 22226 CTs, 6280 MRIs, 1344 IVUs, 2773 barium studies, 255 HSGs, 974 INRs and 1224 VIRs.
Surgical Gastroenterology
Our department is a tertiary referral centre for management of complex GI surgical cases. It caters to the patient population not only from the city of Mumbai , but also from Maharashtra and the rest of India. Since its establishment three years back, the department has catered to patients from other teaching institutes of Mumbai, and other reputed hospitals from Mumbai, and elsewhere. The USP of the department is Quality care, on par with International standards, at a very low cost, with empathy towards patients. Thus we truly abide by the hospital motto of NON-SIBI- SED -OMNIBUS. We have operated successfully on patients who have been refused surgery elsewhere or deemed inoperable elsewhere. We routinely perform complex surgeries such as : Liver Resections, Surgery for Klatskin Tumor, Whipples surgery, Esophagectomy, Gastrectomy, colectomies, advanced Laparoscopic Surgeries. Besides we also have the facility of Radio-Frequency ablation of Liver Tumors which are inoperable, or who do not desire to undergo surgery.
During the year 2882 patients were seen in the OPD ( an increasing trend since 2001 when 1670 patients were seen). Till end Nov 2007 there were 663 admissions. The number of laparoscopic surgeries performed has also increased with 93 lap cholecystectomies in 2007. Till end Nov 2007 349 UGI scopies and 19 colonoscopies were performed. The nosocomial infection rate is 6%.
Special services : Radiofrequency ablation of non-operable solid organ tumors.
We have procured radiofrequency ablator which enables to ablate tumors which have been deemed inoperable, or in patients who are reluctant and not willing for surgeries, owing to its complex nature and for the fear of morbidity. With the help of our radiological colleagues, till date this procedure has been made use of in 36 patients of Liver tumor, under CT/ USG guidance. This procedure which costs around Rupees one lakhs in private is done at the basic cost of needle, which too is obtained at concessional rate. The entire procedure cost s the patients only Rs 25,000/-.
VIDEO-ENDOSCPY SUITE:
A dedicated state of art, Vide-Endoscopy suite, having upper GI, lower GI, lateral viewing and choledochoscope as well is available. The patients are given color print-outs of the reports. All this is done at a very nominal charge of Rs 250/- only.
Special facilities
Counseling of the patients and their relatives: Each and every patient and his relatives, prior undergoing surgery is counseled regarding the nature of surgery, the outcome and the likely complications. Depending on the patient’s level of intelligence, the counseling is done either verbally, pictorially and even through video-CDs of the procedure.

Urology
The department caters to an average of 7000 out patients per year. Total indoor admissions per year are about 1100. About 2000 major and minor operations are carried out per year.
Investigative Facilities offered by the department :
KEM Hospital Urology department has a state of the art Dornier Lithotripter (to break kidney stones without surgery). This is amongst the best such machines in India . It caters to a total of 350 new patients per year.
Our department carries out live and cadaveric renal transplants regularly and is among the oldest institutes in India for kidney transplantation starting transplantation way back in 1965.
PCCL (Percutaneous Cystolithotrity) is a technique to remove large bladder stones by making a small hole in the skin using the PCCL SINGLE STEP ACCESS SHEATH. Using this method, open surgery for urinary bladder stone can be avoided. Our department offers this facility to our patients.
Laparoscopy in urology is a new upcoming modality, which is being started in major urological departments in India. Our department too has started offering laparoscopic procedures to our patients. We perform laparoscopic ureterolithotomies, Lap. Nephrectomies etc. We have also procured Laparoscopy Trainer to train postgraduate students in basic Lap. procedures before they perform them on patients. Ours is the only department in the whole state of Maharashtra which has started and has been regularly performing laparoscopic donor nephrectomy which is considered to be the most difficult and complex urological laparoscopic operation.
