Background History

NUTRITION AND DIETETICS DEPARTMENT

Food service facilities (patient’s kitchen) are in existence since the year 1926. The first postof dietitian was created in the year 1964 held by Mrs. Meena Prabhu (1964 – 1987) and Mrs. Meena Gupte (1964 – 1988). This was followed by Mrs. Sheetal Mhamunkar (1979-2004), Ms. Bernadette Lewis (1985-2011) and Mrs. Mansi Bapat (1987 – 2015). Currently, hospital has 5 dietitians mentioned below.

Department of dietetics is an important segment of institution as it caters to provide food service to all the indoor patients. It also provides specialized medical nutritional therapy to indoor and outdoor patients.

  • All referred patients are seen on appointment basis only.

 

SERVICES PROVIDED:

The department of Dietetics provides a dietetic service to all areas within the hospital and also to designated areas in the local community.

  • Food Service Management
  • Plan and provide nutritionally balanced therapeutic meals to indoor patients
  • Plan and provide enteral nutrition formula (Formula feed) to the indoor patients
  • Check quality of food items supplied by MCGM vendors
  • Supervise food preparation and distribution
  • Advice hospital diet department on weekly cyclic menu planning for in-patients
  • Administrative management of kitchen staff and equipments
  • Train kitchen staff on importance of personnel hygiene, cleanliness and sanitation, safety and security measures

Clinical Dietetic Services

  • Prescribe evidence based, tailormade,therapeutic plan for oral, enteral (tube feeds)& parenteral (IV feeds)nutrition for wide spectrum of disease conditions
  • Conduct extensive NUTRITION CARE PROCESS (including nutritional assessment, diagnosis, intervention, counselling and follow ups)for eachreferred indoor patientsand outdoor patients from following departments

  • Internship program for post-graduate, dietetics college interns from various nutrition institutes in India
  • Internship program for students pursuing RD (Registered Dietitian) examination conducted by Indian Dietetic Association
  • Guest lecture for nutrition post graduates as and when required
  • Research guide for nutrition students/ research assistance to medical fraternity
  • Conducting session on nutrition for Nursing students, BPMT students and Medical professionals
  • Organizing nutrition CME and workshop for dieticians/ medical fraternity
  • Provision of Nutritional advisory services to medical professionals and administration as required
  • Conducting nutrition education program for community (peripheral diabetes OPD’s, Maternity Homes, Aanganwadi workers, BMC schools
  • Mid-Day Meal planning for BMC School and Poshak Aahar regime for rural school and hostels in Maharashtra under state Government

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Students applying for internship should fulfill following criteria:

For College Internship (only for PG Diploma and Masters)

  1. Students must have completed regular/full time course of MSc. or PG. Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from recognized college
  2. Student shall be selected for internship only after clearing written test and viva conducted by the team of hospital dieticians
  3. Student must have Student Membership of Indian Dietetics Association (IDA)

For Registered Dietetic (RD) Internship:

  1. Student must have completed regular/full time course of MSc. or PG. Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from recognized college
  2. Student must have completed regular/full time graduation degree (BSc Home Science) with specialization in Nutrition / Dietetics from recognized college
  3. Student must haveLife Membership ofIDA
  4. Student shall be selected for internship only after clearing written test and viva conducted by the team ofhospital dieticians

NOTE:

  • Internship of selected students is commenced only after receiving permission from the Dean and Deputy dean (I/C)
  • Internship fees is Rs. 500/ month. Students must complete payment procedure as would be instructed by hospital’s administrative department
  • Internship is subjected to hospital’s rules and regulations. In case, the student fails to abide by the same, internship would be terminated at any point of time
  • Certificate of Completion/ Internship certificate isissued by the administrative department. Thus, students must follow issuing procedures and rules as would be instructed by the admin
