Background History<\/h3>\n

Cardiac anesthesia has evolved from its primitive stage to achieve its highly advanced current state and has been recently recognized as a super-specialty anesthesia branch in India despite its existence since last few decades. It is not only restricted to\u00a0 open\u00a0 heart\u00a0 surgeries\u00a0 but\u00a0 it\u00a0 caters\u00a0 to\u00a0 all patients\u00a0 with\u00a0 diseased\u00a0 cardiovascular\u00a0 system\u00a0 who\u00a0 needs\u00a0 special\u00a0 care\u00a0 with\u00a0 advanced monitoring in\u00a0 the\u00a0 perioperative period.<\/p>\n

Cardiac anesthesia came to its existence when Dr P.K.Sen in 1958 established department of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery (CVTS) at this institute. Dr Meena\u00a0 Bhatt\u00a0 and\u00a0 Dr\u00a0 AJ Dhruva\u00a0 successfully administered\u00a0 anesthesia\u00a0 during the first heart transplant in Asia in1968. Since then Dr LathaChaudhry, Dr LalitaTuteja, Dr L Dewoolkar, Dr SarlaPandya, Dr MadhuGarasia, Dr Deepa Kane, Dr. Manjula Sarkar have rendered their services towards cardiac anesthesia.<\/p>\n

However, during all these years of development, increasing need was felt to develop cardiac anaesthesiology as a super specialty branch with the trained, technically sound, skillful and knowledgeable cardiac anesthesiologists. So, initially one year fellowship was started in 2010 which was soon followed by DM course in 2013. It is the first recognized superspecialty anesthesia course in MUHS and Maharashtra.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
